People’s lives are changed through observation and not argument.

Busy Signals

Posted by Greg Heeres on November 5, 2009

busyDon’t you just hate hearing the busy signal on the phone!?!?  My youngest daughter needed some paperwork from the social security administration office.  I tried their listed phone number.  Busy signal.  I tried later that same day….busy.  I strategized and called at a different time the next day….busy again.  No voicemail either.  Busy Busy Busy.

Go back in time to elementary school and think about what you wanted to be when you grew up.  Maybe a doctor, police, teacher, nurse, movie star, professional football player, carpenter?

When I was a young boy, I wanted to be a professional baseball player.  Seems now that I am grownup, all I am is busy.  I am getting tired of being busy.  My pastor shared an interesting statement, “the world is run by busy and tired people.”  I thought about it, and he is correct.

Not sure where along life’s journey, but I assumed that being busy was a good thing.  I am still waiting for my badge of honor for being busy.  Unfortunately, I may be too tired to accept the busy award.

Recently CNN and The Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report about people being overly busy and being tired.  Their survey was lengthy and thorough about sleep deprived Americans.  Of those surveyed, 11% say they haven’t had a full nights sleep in 30 days.  Only 30% stated they got enough sleep every night in the last month. The remaining 59% are living on borrowed sleep time.

There are many contributing factors to being busy, tired and being sleep deprived (health, disappearance of the 9 to 5 job, stress, finances, kids, dysfunctional relationship(s), the awful aging process and more).

I am no longer young enough to realize my dream of being a professional baseball player, but I am old enough to do something about my nightmare of being busy, tired and short of sleep.  Excuse me for 15 minutes, I am going to take a quick nap.
